TWS Distribution acquires distribution rights to Ekene Som Mekwunye's 'Light in the Dark'

TWS Distribution has entered into a business partnership with Riverside Productions for the distribution of their 2019 hit drama, 'Light In the Dark'.

The award-winning film is a Nigerian drama/thriller about a terrifying home invasion that shatters a couple's happy family life and brings their marriage to the edge as a painful fallout unfolds. The movie which premiered in cinemas across Nigeria in January 25, 2019 stars Rita Dominic, Joke Silva, Kiki Omeili, Kalu Ikeagwu, Bimbo Ademoye, Ngozi Nwosu, Saidi Balogun, Emmanuel 'Man. It was directed by prolific filmmaker Ekene Som Mekwunye, who co-produced with Chidinma Uzodike.


There are films that stand the test of time, and 'Light in the Dark' is no exception. The story remains relevant to this day, and visually, the film has aged like fine wine.

'Light in the Dark' has screened in film festivals in five different continents, including Soo Film Festival, Silicon Valley African Film Festival, both in the USA, Brasilia international film festival in Brazil, Nollywood Week film festival in Paris, Durban International Film Festival in South Africa, and Diorama International Film Festival in India. It also got four nominations at the African Movie Academy Awards (AMAA) in 2019, and won the top prize for best film at the Kaduna International Film Festival in 2020 where Mekwunye was also awarded Best Director.

According to Mekwunye in 2017, “We are planning to make a film that would show the effects of domestic violence, what it does to women and more importantly, how best victims can handle it. The film also shows a little of the friction in inter-tribal marriages and the way men look at issue in such marriages. This film would be a tool to draw awareness of this scourge to a lot of ladies in Africa and as well as look at how it affects families when it happens to married women”.


Mekwunye is a multiple award filmmaker with strong interest in photography and teaching. His short film titled ‘Oblivious’ was awarded the winner of Best Short Film in Africa by one of Africa’s biggest film awards, The African Magic Viewers Choice Awards (AMVCA) in 2015. It was also nominated for awards at the Africa International Films Festival (AFRIFF), Africa Movies Academy Awards (AMAA), and different film Festival across the world. Another of his film ‘The Encounter’ which is set during the Biafran war on an encounter with Gen. Ojukwu also won Best Jury Selected Film at the African International Film Festival (AFRIFF) in November 2015 and got a review on the Newsweek magazine in Europe.

Speaking on the acquisition, TWS Distribution's Founder and Chief Executive Officer, Anita Edwards said, "There are films that stand the test of time, and 'Light in the Dark' is no exception.
